Where is the Career Center?
The Career Center is located on Airport Road off of State Route 36, just 2 miles east of Coshocton, Ohio. It’s next door to the Wal-Mart and other businesses. It shares property with Hopewell School.
When was the Career Center established?
The Career Center opened in the fall of 1978. It has been providing vocational education in Coshocton County for over thirty years.
Who can attend the Career Center?
While the majority of our students are from the three school districts in Coshocton County, any Ohio high school student may enroll, but they will need to provide their own transportation.
Is there an application fee?
When and how do I apply?
The application window normally opens sometime in February. If you wish to apply, you must complete an online enrollment application from our website. We will notify you that your application has been received. Your enrollment will remain in a pending status, until your prerequisite courses and credits have been verified.
How will I know if I am accepted into a program?
Some programs have a waiting list and require a short interview, but you will be notified by early summer as to your enrollment status and placement into your selected program of choice.
What programs are offered at the Career Center?
We offer a number of programs. Please see the various links on the Career Center homepage for a complete view of our programs, classes, and instructors.
Will I take academic classes at the Career Center?
Yes, you will. Depending on your program and your academic needs, half of your day will be spent in academic classes and the other half in lab and related classes.
What is the daily schedule at the Career Center?
The students’ school day runs from 8:00am to 2:20pm. There are eight 47-minute periods during the day. Your schedule is determined by the program you are enrolled in and the academic classes you are required to take.
Can I play sports or participate in other activities at my home school while attending the Career Center?
Yes, you can. Many of our students participate in sports, music, marching band, homecoming court and other activities. Most of the home schools work with us by putting those programs and extra-curricular activities at the end of the day, allowing students to make it back to their home school after finishing their classes here. Our students are also regularly invited back to their home schools to attend special events.
How will I get the academic credits needed to graduate?
We offer the standard academic courses needed to complete Ohio graduation requirements. While at the Career Center, you’ll receive the final two English, two math, one science, and one social studies credit needed to earn your high school diploma. Other academic electives are also offered, and some College Credit Plus classes are available.
What is the Career Passport?
In addition to a high school diploma, graduates who have attended the Career Center will receive a Career Passport. The Career Passport is a vinyl-bound portfolio which contains program completion information, career-tech competencies, industry certifications, a resume, personal and professional recommendations, and other awards or certificates of merit.
Can I receive advanced college credits?
All of our career-tech programs offer some form of advanced college credit for our students completing a two-year program. Credit is granted through our membership in the Ohio Tech Prep Consortium, as well as individual articulation agreements with partner colleges in the state of Ohio. Additionally, we have College Credit Plus classes through COTC and Kent State – Tuscarawas.
Can I attend a half-day?
If you choose to remain at your home high school for academics or extra-curricular reasons, we will work with your home high school’s guidance team to accommodate your wishes. If your home high school is River View, there is a mid-day bus that transports students who wish to attend the Career Center half-days.
Did you know the Career Center is both a career tech and college prep school?
That’s right. And, let’s face it, in today’s economic climate, America’s young people need to be prepared for both the workplace and higher education. Our Career Center students are getting the best of both worlds. Half their school day is spent receiving hands-on technical training in lab and job-placement settings. Academic classes make up the remainder of their day; that means the traditional English, math, science, and social studies courses found in any standard high school. When they leave us, our students can pursue their choice of a career or college. The Coshocton County Career Center is not just a vocational school; it’s a place for anyone serious about a quality education and occupational success. It’s where futures begin.
